We watched a TV show about architects building housing for the poor. They used all kinds of recycled and inexpensive materials to make unique good quality housing for the down and out in Alabama I think it was.
I just love looking at ways to build houses that are out of the ordinary. The tiny houses fascinate me.
I made the comment to Tony if I were 12 again I would think about being an architect. I think it would be a very rewarding job to make space for people that is well thought out and suits the needs of the population without be a McMansion like you see so many of now.
So if you were 12 what profession would you dream of becoming?

Great topic, CG!
Actually, today is my baby's 12th birthday! Not sure what he wants to be, but I'm sure whatever he picks it may have something to do with sports given how much he watches ESPN and reads the sports stats in the paper.
My career aspirations at 12 probably were something along the line of being the president of the Michael Jackson fan club. I lived and breathed MJ back in the day. Later I remember wanting to go into interior design, until my mom talked me out of it. My path to becoming a teacher was a long one.
And Peridot, I feel ya on that 13 y.o. shrug, only I get the 12 y.o. version (lol).
Both my kids are in LOVE with the idea of being actors/ singers / models. They are begging me to put them in acting class. It is amazing to hear them discuss this. They talk about producer credits, opening sequences, back end marketing deals!!!!!! How do they even know this stuff?????
Like a few others here, I wanted to be a fashion designer. But, like Peridot, I couldn't sew to save my soul! In 8th grade, I had a sewing class...and couldn't even make the first basic assignment, a little drawstring gym bag, without goofing it up. I sewed up all the edges and forgot to leave an opening. LOL. When the teacher was coming around checking our work, I remember furtively trying to pull out a row of stitches before she reached me. (haha)
I always loved drawing .. and wanted to be an artist - - but that whole 'starving artist' label sort of scared me. I ended up working as a travel agent for many years...which was fine. But if I could start over again .. I'd love to have something helpful with everyday life under my belt .. like gourmet cooking or nursing. I've been a novice at both of those all these years, but it sure would be nice to actually be a pro at either one.

As I've indicated below, one of my earliest desires was to be a fashion designer or illustrator. I was always sketching and drawing pictures of ladies in fabulous outfits. LOL.
The other thing I might do, if I was 12 again, would be to go into Rehabilitation Therapy. That was another career that interested me when I was young. I think I got the idea because one of my older sisters had polio when she was 12 and as her younger sibling, I was quite enthralled with the physiotherapy, etc. that she had to do during her recovery. I'm afraid that the sciences and math courses rather got in the way of that... I sometimes kick myself that I didn't study maths and sciences in a more disciplined way during high school. I wasn't horrible at them, I just didn't enjoy them much. So I dropped them as soon as I could, and concentrated on other subjects. But that decision narrowed my career choices. I'd caution any young woman against doing that these days. Keep all options open so you have lots of opportunities to choose from when it's time to go beyond high school.

I would become a world famous artist. Dream on.
Well.........., I loved playing with my paper dolls too at age 12, and designing clothes for them, like a few others here.

I saw fascinated by Amelia Earhart..... so I wanted to fly, but I also wanted to be a rodeo cowgirl.
NOW? I'd join the ARMY, after college , of course.

At age 12 I had no career aspirations at all, never even thought about it back then. I only knew I wanted to get out of my small town and live somewhere more interesting.
I ended up going to paralegal school after college. I enjoy my career and have a high aptitude for the law, so it's all good. But if I had it to do over, I would go into a career in academia -- art history or literature.
I once underwent career aptitude testing and found out two of my highest-scoring career paths would be FBI/CIA agent or monk. Didn't see the monk thing coming but I've been told many times I'd make a good secret agent.

The other career choice isn't that much more lucrative -- history professor. And the job search for a history major has always been difficult.
If I had the looks, I wish I could have been a male model -- LOL but serious at the same time.

When I was 12, I wanted to be a teacher, but first I wanted to attend Wellesley a la Jennifer in ''Love Story.'' (Did you know that Ali McGraw went Wellesley too? And that she's now 72?!!!). By the time I got old enough to actually become a teacher, I saw the salary forecasts and chucked the whole idea. Now I'm getting rich -- rich I tell you!!! --- as a paralegal. Bwhahaha!
If I had it to do over again, I'd persevere until I mastered math and science, which I mostly sucked at due to lack of interest, and then I'd become some kind of research scientist.

When I was 12, I probably wasnt thinking about that yet. I was just at the outer edge of wanting to be a cowboy LOL. (Tomboy that I was)
The word college was not in the picture so I went to a trade school and studied Cosmetology. One day I drew a portrait of the main cute guy in school and an art teacher said ''Wow,You should switch to commercial art.'' I followed his advice. (Just because you can draw is not enough of a reason) I've always regreted listening to him.
Long story short I got married at 19 had two kids and that suited me fine. After they were in school, I had plenty of time for portraits and assorted money saving projects at home.
Now to the original question. I know what I am suited for and that would be EVAC, emergency medical services. I am not freaked out by blood or suffering. I am a calm, saver by nature Anything that needs to be out of danger, I'm the person you want looking down at you.
The second career would be writing comedy. I've had 3 or 4 things on the Leno show and thats quite an accomplishment considering they have bins full of stuff people send in.
Very interesting question.

When Leo was a little guy we used to wonder if he might be an architect since he liked to build and he liked to draw. Then when he was a little older we thought he might grow up to be an attorney since he liked to argue!
When I was 12 I wanted to be a fashion designer, spent hours sketching clothes. Eventually I realized this career might require a little sewing ability and I removed it from consideration, LOL.
